Rock Steady Farm & Flowers is a for-profit farm located in Millerton, NY -- a rural and active community few hours north of NYC, close to the MA and CT borders. We use holistic farming practices that allow us to grow high quality vegetables, professional cut flowers, and herbs for a diverse array of market outlets. We manage a total of 11 acres- 1.75 in flowers, 7 in veggies, and 2+ acres of rotational cover crop. We have diversified customers including our 125+ person CSA, floral designers, markets, restaurants, food pantries, social justice non-profits, and design for special events in the Hudson Valley and New York City. Our farm is grounded in close partnerships with other land based projects, neighbors, and non-profits who are also working to build equity in our region and beyond.

We are a growing cooperatively-owned farm, with opportunities for equity for staff members after a trial period. Our current staff and returning crew are women, queer and mixed race people. We do not limit applicants based on these demographics, but it is important that the people who join our team are open towards a diverse community both at work and within our local community.

We are looking to hire a full-time skilled farmer to run our flower operation. The cut flower operation is currently 1.75 acres, mostly annuals with some perennials, biennials, and two 50ft tunnels for season extension. Our flower operation is a high volume production enterprise, and is integrated into our 10+ acre vegetable farm. We are tractor based and think in “whole farm” systems. We anticipate that someone with experience farming veggies or flowers over 5 acres will best fit the pace and systems we have -- although that is not a hard requirement.

The head flower farmer will manage all operations of the flower farm, from the seeding schedule to harvest and post-harvest handling, and overseeing sales. This person will be taking over an existing operation, so there is a good deal of structure in place to help with the transition. That said, there is also room for flexibility and new ideas, especially from candidates who join us with a lot of experience.

We have a reputation for providing the highest quality blooms to designers in the Hudson Valley and NYC. We are looking for someone to not just maintain our current brand and standard of quality, but take it to an even higher level of professionalism, reach and profitability. Given that we have a strong wholesale customer base, we anticipate that 2018 will look similar as far as sales outlets - to help ease this staffing transition. We are open to flower growers who might want to change the marketing strategy, and/or include more design over time, to increase profitability. Currently we seek someone whose primary focus is farming high-quality wholesale flowers.

Primary responsibilities include:

  • Crew management: depending on candidate's experience and skills the scale of the flower operation may decrease in size in 2018, thus needing a smaller crew. That said, our current scale requires management of 3-4 people.

  • Work in partnership with vegetable managers/owners for whole farm planning, fertility plan, field preparation (primarily done by vegetable farmers), irrigation schedule, delivery schedule and budgeting.

  • Implement, and adjust as needed, an existing crop plan of annuals, biennials and perennials. This includes: propagation schedule, bed preparation schedule (field and hoophouse), transplanting and direct sowing schedule.

  • Manage weeding, irrigation, and organic pest and disease control to ensure the highest quality flowers.

  • Actively engage in sales and marketing responsibilities. Delegate sales and post-harvest related tasks to flower team, make weekly availability list.

  • Ensure that weekly sales goals are met. Ability to communicate well with entire management team to hit these goals.

  • Assist with basic maintenance of facilities and help maintain a clean work environment.

  • Maintain high energy and fast paced work environment for all aspects of day to day farming.

  • Maintain and fine tune a very detail oriented record keeping system in the greenhouse, field, and for farm finances.

Skills and qualifications:

  • A sense of humor and joy for farming!

  • At least 2 years of managing a professional cut flower operation of 1 acre or more.

  • Experience managing farm crews, demonstrated ability to communicate clearly and efficiently, while having fun and promoting a productive work environment.

  • Propagation and high tunnel management experience.

  • Experience with bulbs and tubers.

  • Tractor experience not required but helpful.

  • Must be self-motivated and able to work outside in ALL weather conditions including snow, rain, high temps. in the summer, early in the morning. Strong manual dexterity skills in all weather.

  • Ability to read spreadsheets, detailed crop-plans and budgets in excel and/or google sheets.

  • Experience managing and implementing budgets.

  • Strong customer service and marketing skills / ability to teach these skills to someone on your team.

  • Experience making Farmer’s Market bouquets

  • Ability to work independently as well as with a team.

  • Very detail oriented.

  • Demonstrated commitment to sustainable farming practices.

  • Comfortably able to lift a minimum of 50lbs.

  • Clean drivers license and reliable transportation for commuting to farm.

Schedule, Compensation, Housing

  • This is a full-time in season, and part-time winter position, with a minimum of a 2 year commitment. Full-time is based on a 40-55 hour work week, with the possibility of rotating weekends for CSA distribution and/or greenhouse management.

  • Start date: February 2018.

  • Competitive hourly pay (based on the candidate’s skills and experience), paid vacation, sick days and all the produce and flowers you could want.

  • We can connect people to local rentals that may be available in the area.
